On Sunday, May 2, reDiscover Nob Hill is hosting its Spring Walking Tour, exploring the architectural legacy of the residential neighborhoods. Led by architectural historian David Kammer, the walk will explore the 1926 College View Addition. Walkers will learn to “read” houses along the route and how to research the history of their house.

Gather in front of Celebro Natural Living at 109 Carlisle Blvd NE at 1pm. The walk will last 2 hours and will end at a 1931 Mediterranean house on Hermosa with refreshments and discussion on how owners have preserved the historic character of their unique house. More info here.

Join the City of Albuquerque in celebrating it’s 404th birthday for Founders Day Fiesta on Friday, May 7th from 6:30–8:30pm at Plaza Don Luis on Romero Street, adjacent to the Plaza in Old Town with “International Bluegrass and Folk Music” as the theme. Stroll Old Town’s historic streets, shop for unique items, dine in the area’s restaurants and listen to performances by two excellent groups is not to be missed.

6pm: Adobe Brothers, an eclectic group of “identical quintuplets” (not really!) that play a wide variety of acoustic music, including bluegrass, Celtic, old-time country, Latin, folk and Western swing—a composite style they refer to as “international bluegrass.” In one form or another, they have played together since 1979, performing throughout New Mexico and the Southwest. Their music has garnered many awards, for their compositions and instrumentals.

7pm: Bill Hearne’s Roadhouse Review, Honkytonks, roadhouses, empty whiskey glasses and unrequited love are the brick and mortar of country music, and there isn’t a better mason than Bill Hearne. Legally blind since birth, Bill took up the guitar when he was seven. Largely musically self-taught, Bill developed a picking style he calls cross-picking. “Bill Hearne’s Roadhouse Revue” includes bassist and vocalist Cathy Faber and Bob Goldstein on lead guitar, mandolin and banjo, with Auge Hays on steel guitar. Their enthusiasm and joy is infectious and audiences everywhere get into the spirit of just pure fun.

516 ARTS announces Artificial Selection, featuring 18 artists from across the country with work in photography, painting, sculpture, interactive video, ceramics, installation and robotics. The exhibition examines contemporary artists’ responses to the processes of adaptation, mutation and survival, when the natural order distinguishing species or machine becomes less distinct. Hybrids pervade our mythologies and religions and continue to play an influential role in the way we perceive our capabilities as a creative species. The selective breeding and cross-breeding of plants and animals for domestication was only the beginning of what science is enabling us to create in the 21st century. The exhibition raises questions about the consequences of the process of artificial selection.

Opening Reception: This Saturday, 6-8pm

Television icon Ed Asner stars in this one-man show that takes us through FDR’s White House years including the Depression, the steps leading up to WWII and the war years. Asner shows us why this president was know as “that man in the White House,” scorned by many and admired by most.

We see and hear his fireside chats; his controversial packing of the Supreme Court; his personal life with Eleanor and his discreet but definite affair with Lucy Mercer; his courage to break the Neutrality Act; his manipulation of Congress; the Pearl Harbor controversy and the benevolent dictatorship he called the presidency from 1933-44, which made him the first man in history to be elected to four terms.

walking down

Great article on supermarkets as the anchors of “main street”-centered neighborhoods. Well worth the read. We like~

The environs do make a difference. A market with an attractive public space outside — some kind of public square — will have an edge. The planners’ “rule of thumb” that people will only walk a quarter-mile isn’t true, Hinshaw contends. Make the walk interesting — no blank walls, no parking lots, but rather a mix of parks and gardens and public space, and interesting stores to glance in — and folks will walk further. Especially for food.
